Essay on Leaders of the Nation of Islam - 3021 Words
Leaders of Nations The Nation of Islam impacted many African American people during its time. This Black Muslim nation demanded adherence to basic teachings, which included racial separation, white devilry, and the coming Armageddon. None of these basic teachings supported James Baldwinââ¬â¢s perceptions, which pitied whites for their inability to see through the color curtain and embrace differences that whites and blacks held together to create a better, inexorable, and supreme nation. Leaders such as Elijah Muhammad and Malcolm X provided the vision of the Nation of Islam. These moguls proved to be two of the most powerful leaders of their time. They paved their way through history and rightfully landed a spot belonging toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦From his speeches on the radio and in newspapers, many people also thought of Muhammad as a fierce man, among these people was Baldwin. On first meeting Muhammad, Baldwin shows his surprise by saying ââ¬Å"I [had] associated him with f erocity. But, no ââ¬â the man who came into the room was small and slender, really very delicately put together, with a thin face, large, warm eyes, and a most winning smileâ⬠(Baldwin 323). Muhammad was a regular man that merely exuded confidence and carried himself with pride. He had a powerful air around him, because he meant every single word that escaped his mouth. As superior of the Islam movement, Muhammad helped integrate the movementââ¬â¢s demand within as many black communities as he could. He started out with implementing a grocery store in a nearby black community with nothing but Muslim employees. Then slowly a restaurant and a bakery came to pass. Muhammad was well on his way to proving to blacks that they could accomplish their own needs without having ââ¬Å"to demand [anything of] the white devil or resort to himâ⬠(Clegg 50). According to a New York Times article written by Peter Kihss, the movements demand was simply ââ¬Å"[s]eparation, not integ rationâ⬠¦ land of our ownâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Negro Extremistâ⬠1). Lilly s Long Term Debt Ratio - 1496 Words
2011. Pfizerââ¬â¢s debt ratio has also been above the benchmark since 2009, but it has been lower than Lillyââ¬â¢s. Lillyââ¬â¢s long-term debt-to-equity ratio was over the benchmark during the year 2008 and 2009 but stayed below 1.0 in the other years. It should be noted that Lillyââ¬â¢s debt ratio has declined during the period, whereas, Pfizerââ¬â¢s increased. Although, Lillyââ¬â¢s long-term debt-to-equity ratio appears to be good, its total debt-to-equity ratio, which is much more comprehensive, is above the reasonable limit and indicates that the firm has more debt than equity. Thus, weakening its long-term financial position. However, Lillyââ¬â¢s earnings fell by 14.2% in the year 2011, and ROA and ROE also fell during the period. Its P/E ratio fell substantially since 2008 due to the marketââ¬â¢s lack of optimism about Lillyââ¬â¢s future. Lillyââ¬â¢s management is under considerable pressure to reverse the declining trend. Accounting Theory and Current Issues Stipulated Bookkeeping Speculat
Question: Discuss about the Accounting Theory and Current Issues for Stipulated Bookkeeping Speculations. Answer: Introduction Bookkeeping is a field which has been being developed and as of now managing different issues in light of the enhancing innovation. This paper contends on the premise of stipulated bookkeeping speculations and the rising issues (Reddy 2004). A case of contemporary issues examined inside this paper is nature, and presentation of bookkeeping standards in innovative work organizations (RD). Bio-sustainable Feeds (BSF) is one of the organizations in the business doing research in Australia in the water sustenance creation part. Bio feasible nourishment has been recorded among organizations in the Australian stock trade market. The organization operation has been under reactions by the environmentalist who see its operations adversely. Taking into account the bookkeeping and business contentions and also hypotheses, all organizations have a patent right to their items as per the law. In this manner an organization ought to be considered responsible for they have created. Bio-sustainable i ndustry created a plant based water society nourishment items which never yield better results according to the desires and wound up losing colossal whole of cash all the while (Porwal 2000). The extent of this paper likewise uses bookkeeping speculations in connection to the present issues like BSF Ltd. The paper misuses the present issues in connection to bookkeeping hypothesis and Bio-maintainable fish nourish organization. Figuring of equitable patent worth is another issue which has been examined inside the extent of this paper. Nature and value to society of the research being done by BSF Ltd The sort of examination being finished by this organization is a formative exploration. Bio Sustainable Company fills in as RD firm performing research in the field of fish cultivation. The organization venture is an examination resolved to enhance nourishment generation in Australia through water society. The water nourish examination is a test based exploration which requires a great deal of experimentation to guarantee its prosperity. The advantages from this sort of exploration are constantly estimated to be in future. BSF LTD exploration can likewise be seen as a down to earth research in which outsiders additionally advantage. For example, in the above case the general public and the organization giving backing will have profits by the achievement of this task. Formative venture like the one being directed by bio sustainable nourishes comes toward the end of general examination. The organization had led general research and distinguished each perspective required. Advancement s ubsequently encourage the interest in the region of decision which is thinking of microbes water bolster creation. It incorporates dangers because of the point that it depends on trial. Advantages and benefits of improvement examination is procured toward the end of a given timeframe. Interests being developed and research are considered as costs making the financial specialists to have no case in instances of disappointment. This improvement research task will positively affect individuals living in Australian if there should be an occurrence of its prosperity. Despite the fact that a ton of capital has been put into the exploration, the consequence of the advancement will help to decrease world appetite sooner rather than later. BSF Ltd has attempted their best attempting to give ceaseless fish supply into the business sectors lessening the rate of word hanger. BSF ltd flow examination is to the general population salvage since it includes reusing of waste items in the formation of a superior and quickly developing fish. The examination shows that the majority of the fixings required for such fish food are waste items. The organization expects to utilize microorganisms in their assembling which may not be an excess of weight to the general public. Wood chips are waste items, woodchips are less expensive to obtain, promptly accessible and has no organic consequences for the shoppers who are individuals f rom society. Another crude material for the creation is a reused methane gas which does not require much capital. Assembling of these water food is more secure to environment the same number of the generation materials are natural toxins. Sugar buildup, methane and wood chips are disposed of items whose assistance in the end of poisons in the encompassing. This outcomes into lessened rate of sickness compression by the general population. Generation of water food as per BSF ltd in such away has a positive effect to individuals from the general public. The kind fish kept with such sort of food has its omega oil in place and develops quicker contrasted with the typical. The quicker development of fish will bring about expanded nourishment supply to the general public decreasing craving levels in Australia in future. Accomplishment of this exploration will prompt diminishment of the deviation between those who are well off and the have not in contrary to previous strategy where just the rich could bear the cost of fish. The general public values this examination since it has come about into anticipation of human quality sustenance waste. Transformation of human sustenance item into fish dinner was an incredible test to Australian culture and came about to lack of healthy sustenance and starvation as quality human nourishment was utilized to develop lavish fish which dominant part couldn't bear. Biotechnological water sus tenance innovation will prompt spreading out of water society inside the Australian culture. Rise of a few water ranches implies foundation of openings for work encouraging monetary strengthening of a given society. This sort of speculation is considerable to the group as it encourages and in addition boosting its monetary dependability. Conversion of human food product into fish meal was a great challenge to Australian society and resulted to malnutrition and starvation as quality human food was used to grow luxurious fish which majority could not afford. Biotechnological aqua food invention will lead to spreading out of aqua culture within the Australian society. Emergence of several aqua farms means establishment of job opportunities facilitating economic empowerment of a given society. This kind of investment is substantial to the community as it facilitates its progress as well as boosting its economic stability. Complications with the initial research conducted by BSF Ltd. The $360 million AUD research speculation performed by Bio-practical Feeds (BSF) Ltd has a considerable measure of downsides to the organization itself, economy and Australian culture. The exploration was not led with the examination of human sustenance, survival instrument of different sorts of fish lastly the financial status of individual national. The movement from water feast to planted produce was excessively costly analyzed, making it impossible to microscopic organisms generation of water food. Planted fixings, for example, canola, corn, soya-bean, sunflower and other ranch items were costly contrasted with microscopic organisms generation which majors in reusing of waste items. The organization spent a considerable measure in the buys of crude materials without hypothesis of what may happen in future. Different sorts of fish wound up dead coming about into a colossal breakdown of cash. This happened due the disappointment of the organization to recognize the best nourishment for every kind of fish. BFS Ltd industry never considered the results of ranch based fish food to types of fish and to human nourishment as uncovered by Jillian Fry, chief of CLF's Public Health and Sustainable Aquaculture Project and an employee at the Johns Hopkins. Ranch created fish secure omega 3 unsaturated fat from different items particularly angle oil. The exploration created costly little fish which were reasonable for the rich. Regardless where just a given part of a populace can manage the cost of an item, showcase gets to be restricted due diminished interest. Such situations prompts imbalanced harmony in the free market activity and additionally flimsy economy. Extra issue with the exploration is inconsideration of the significance of the crude materials. The greater part of the homestead items utilized as a part of the creation are astounding sustenance crops for human surval. This sort of fish cultivating prompted human starvation since the majority of the fundament al sustenance products were being changed over into fish dinner. In light of human sustenance the end fish items from this movement were of low quality and could prompt wellbeing issues and entanglements. The sort of fish delivered amid the primary creation indicated decreased weight instead of enhancing the weight. Nature, accounting and comparison between general research and RD Accounting in RD is the consideration of expenses and revenues over a given period of time. The cost allocated for development should match expenses and revenues. All assets purchased in development are expensed. This capitalization of assets in the development is considered as an expense since they are meant to generate income in future. Development expenditures are formed with the expectation of future profits and products of measurement. From the given case Bio sustainable company is operating as RD. Therefore all costs of the company according to Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) shall be considered as expense (Caicedo 2012). This kind of assumption comes as a result of uncertainty concerning profits that will be generated by the research company in future. As discussed prior there must be a match between the revenues of BSF Company and the expenses. The matching principle in the RD accounts usually applicable after a period of time mostly ten years. For example investm ent of large amount made by the company to acquire raw materials is considered as an expense. In cases of failure, investment made by the company will not have any revenue since all assets are treated as expenses. On the other hand the company may decide to capitalize the expenses to secure some as revenue in any cases of failure. This means that there are high possibilities that the RD will lead to future economic benefit. When investments are capitalized the Company accountants are therefore able to justify putting various investment transactions on their balance sheets. General research is broad and requires a lot of funding which has got no sure benefit in return compared to development research. Investors enjoy tax breaks in which tax are often deductible but some are not deductible. General development research such as market research and assessment research are not subject to taxation making many investors to get into development research. Development allows more cost effective investment thus increasing the profit margin. In terms of financing RD enjoy the benefits of funding from other parties like established companies. Such companies enjoy qualified employees since many of graduates tend to join these companies. The above reasons makes several firms to RD industry to enjoy the benefits and exploit the available economies of scale Development is an application of already conducted research on a particular field. Development utilizes the research finding and outcome to come up with a specific end product as seen in the case of BSF ltd Development is a sub branch of a general research which deals with the generation of a more indispensable understanding and deigns important in manufacturing of the model (Jucker and Rouchota 1998). On the other hand research is defined as an indefinite investigation. It targets a more general field in comparison to development which is more specific. For instance if BSF Ltd was a general research facility it could have conducted a more broad research rather than plant based, fish based and bacteria based fish feed. Research works on a broad perspective while development only apply to the last part and on a specific finding. General research requires large amount of money while development is specific thus specific budget (Sierra 2002). The accountings in general research differs from that of development since only expenses are accounted. All company assets are not expenses as seen in development. Fair market value patent assumptions and calculations Development based research companies like BFS ltd have patent for their products (Tavares and Barretta 2006). Calculation of the patent value according to GAAP involves appropriate assumptions to come up with the fair values (W. In the case of Bio-sustainable, the company received a lot of grants from Australian government research sector (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) the company agrees to spend the money in two years and the addition ten years. The assumptions during the calculations of fair market patent value under the combination of discounted cash flow and real option method. The method assumes that a sole biotechnology firm has ten years. Since BSF ltd is among the biotech industry the sum of total year applies and addition two years of agreement. Fair market patent is probably the most recognized standard of patent calculation (Pulgar and Cano 2001). Calculation of patent is recognized by bio sustainable food company as the most standard appropriate method to cover their patent rights within the market. In order to arrive to the fair market value, several approaches can be used. These approaches have been put in place by GAAP other framework organizations to help in identifying the nature of the company patent right (Humphrey and Miller 2012). The company in this case operates under the grants of $500 million from the government therefore the nature of patent is calculated based on the royalty determination methods. Income based approaches methods are based on the future cash flows from the royalty grants. The discounted cash flow (DFC) is the basic tool appropriate in the determination of fair market patent. Patent valuation technique is applicable in this situation since probability adjustment can be determined. Identifying fair market patent depends on the creation of intellectual property (Zuppiroli 2012). Applying the approach to BSF research and development of fish food made from bacteria as a raw material an d other recycled raw materials such as methane. The company is determined to find the most suitable fish food production to facilitate aqua culture. Therefore in these case fair market value (FMV) would be equal to cost of new replacement (CRN) less physical depreciation (PD), functional obsolescence (FO) and economic obsolescence (EO) (Kosfeld and Titze 2015). FMV = CRN PD FO EO (Gaffikin 2006). To arrive to fair market value the (DCF) method is integrated with other patent calculation methods resulting to fair market patent indication. (10yers +2yrs= 12 years). The DCF market value* (1+factor %) = patent fair value indication. The value lies two methods as shown. The NVP = $ 700000000 *(1+8.0) = $630000000. Therefore fair patent value =Preliminary DCF value (1 + factor %) = Patent fair market value indication. Methods integrated during fair market value calculation includes competitive advantage valuation which most of the time contradicts other methods (Holl 2016). The competitive advantage contribution of an intellectual property asset is defined as the asset's advantages or disadvantages in comparison to an average subs titute intellectual property asset. The major premise of the CAV method is that the value of an intellectual property asset derives entirely from the value of the product, process or service that utilizes the intellectual property asset. The petty principle of the CAV method is that the value of an intellectual property asset can best be identified by the competitive advantage that it contributes to a product, process or service (Riahi 2005). BSF journal entries for BSF LTD. Bio sustainable aqua culture food operates as an RD therefore the kind of transactions made between the period ended 2013 and 2016 can be presented in the books of account. The nature of accounts in research and development RD is different from other normal business transactions. Therefore the company operations is considered as long term assets (Veugelers 2012). Bio sustainable aqua feed Journal Entries for Purchase of long lived assets from 2013 to 2016 Balance brought forward from the previous business operation Debit ($) Credit ($) Balance brought forward Cash $ 34000000 $34000000 Research and development costs are an expense; therefore, those costs incurred by the company cannot be amortized. Will only be decreased for any impairment to its market value. Goodwill will never be increased in value due to an increase in its market value. BSF Ltd. received a $500 million AUD grant from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO, Federal Government of Australia Grants Debit ($) Credit ($) CSIRO, Federal Government of Australia $ 500000000 Cash $ 500000000 Research and development cost are to be treated not as an intangible asset but only as an expense. particulars Debit credit facility $160000000 cash $160000000 Cost involve in transporting Particulars Debit credit transport $200000000 Cash $200000000 In consideration of $500 million AUD grant from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO, Federal Government of Australia) the right place is the credit since the company is to refund back the money (Evans 2003). All the liabilities such the grant is debited since it is the companies responsibility to refund back the money to the owners after the purpose is achieved. In the research and development a third party such as the agencies are beneficiaries thus any funding from them is a liability to the research company such as BSF Ltd. Management asserted in a prospectus of patent value The above calculation of the fair market patent value enable company to proceed with their operation. The assertion is true and allows the company to continue with operation based on the decision of going concern. One of the accounting theories is the issue of going concern as seen in this case where the company is proceeding with the business (Belderbos et al. 2014). For the company to procedure with their line of production, it must have a patent right. Bio-sustainable Feed has got the patent right to access the bacteria since they had operated a food company prior to the current development. The company aquaculture food production for the last period before venturing into the new technology where bacteria is used as a raw material for production (Henderson et al. 1992). The assertion is true since the patent rights allow RD companies to utilize complementary resources to bring their final idea into the market. Therefore BSF ltd is permitted to access bacteria from the previous com pany. The issue of going concern has been put into practice to facilitate the investment. Conclusion The above discussion indicates the relevance of accounting theory and its application to research and development (RD). It is clear from above that the nature of accounting used in development is quite different from other business entities. Recording transactions in RD Company requires a deeper understanding since cots and assets used are all considered expense. Another important issue is the calculation of fair market patent value which also takes a different dimension. The calculation of patent value assists a company to determine their level of operation. The issue of going concern is another factor that is under theories of accounting and determines ability of a company to remain operational. Nike And Asian Labour Essays - Business, Nike, Inc., Fashion
Nike And Asian Labour There has been much debate and controversy recently concerning Nike's Asian labour practices. This is a very complex issue and one that is a long way from being solved. It is very difficult to determine which side of this argument to defend, as both sides acknowledge the facts, yet put a completely different spin on them. Do you believe Nike's critics who say they're exploiting workers? Or, do you believe Nike when they say that they are giving workers in these countries wonderful opportunities to raise their standard of living? The consensus answer to this question by all sides seems to be that Nike is improving but still has a ways to go. Nike's Asian ties can be traced back to the birth of the company. The CEO, chairman of the board of directors, and co-founder, Phil Knight, wrote his masters thesis at Stanford University in the 1960's on the prospects for using Asian labor to produce goods cheaper and more effectively. In order to incorporate this plan in to Nike's business structure, a partnership was set up with a Japan based company called Tiger Sports. Tiger Sports would manufacture shoes for Nike in Asia then shipped them to the United States to sell. In the 1980's however, this aspect of Nike's partnership with Tiger Sports was dissolved, and Nike was forced to expand production from the United States to countries such as Taiwan and Korea where their products could be manufactured at the same relatively low cost that Nike enjoyed through the Tiger Sports partnership. Over the last five of years, however, the production numbers for these countries have been decreasing at an alarming rate due to the fact that their economies expanded at a very rapid pace. This, in turn, caused the cost of labour to increase dramatically, and therefore Nike could no longer produce their product as efficiently as before. In lieu of the rapid economic growth in the pacific rim, and the increased production cost, Nike has moved more into countries such as Vietnam and China where the labour is cheaper and labour laws less stringent. (VLF, VN Fact Sheet) Nike does not own any of the factories that produces its products in Asia, and subsequently they do not directly employ the workers or management. They contract out work to factories that make all of the products and run all of the factories. They do, however, have a massive amount of leverage when dealing with these factories because of the huge contracts they supply. To ensure good labour practices, Nike has a Code of Conduct that every contractor must agree to abide by in order to get a contract. The Conduct Code in theory condemns and prohibits child labour, requires that workers be paid fair wage, imposes caps on the days and hours a worker can be forced to work, prohibits mistreatment or discrimination of workers in any form, obligates factories to implement programs that benefit worker's health and safety, and recognizes and respects the workers right to freedom of association. There are 1000 Nike employees worldwide monitoring operations at the subcontractors and specifically the Code of Conduct adherent. The most consistent criticism of Nike is that the workers in the factories contracted by them are not aware of the Code of Conduct that was agreed upon, and/or it is not enforced (especially the wages and overtime aspects) by the factory officials. Critics contend that the factories pay less than minimum wage at times, force too many overtime hours, and fail to make the workplace as clean and as safe as standards dictate. Many of the factories that are contracted have workers and management from different countries, causing some problems in communication. Some factories in China have Taiwanese Managers while factories in Vietnam have Korean managers. This is one reason offered by Nike in defense of the factories failure to comply with the Code of Conduct. To look into this issue, earlier this year Nike commissioned Andrew Young, a former civil rights leader and United Nations ambassador to do an analysis of how well the Code was working. Young and his staff visited four factories in Vietnam, Indonesia, and China for three to four hours each led by Nike's people. Young's conclusion proved not only to be uninformative, but somewhat aggravating to the public due to its elementary tone. "Nike is doing a good job, but could do better" was the statement released by Young at the end of the report. Another aspect of the inquiry that bothered the public was

Definition and Examples of Anti-Language
Definition and Examples of Anti-Language Anti-language is a minority dialect or method of communicating within a minority speech community that excludes members of the main speech community. The term antilanguage was coined by British linguist M.A.K. Halliday (Anti-Languages, American Anthropologist, 1976). Examples and Observations Anti-languages may be understood as extreme versions of social dialects. They tend to arise among subcultures and groups that occupy a marginal or precarious position in society, especially where central activities of the group place them outside the law. . . .Anti-languages are basically created by a process of relexicalizationthe substitution of new words for old. The grammar of the parent language may be preserved, but a distinctive vocabulary develops, particularlybut not solelyin activities and areas that are central to the subculture and that help to set it off most sharply from the established society.(Martin Montgomery, An Introduction to Language and Society. Routledge, 1986) The ideological function and sociolinguistic status of Black English is reminiscent of (though not identical to) an anti-language (Halliday, 1976). This is a linguistic system that reinforces group solidarity and excludes the Other. It is speech characteristic of a group which is in but not of a society. As an anti-language, BE emerges as a counter-ideology; it is the language of rebellion and the symbolic expression of solidarity among the oppressed.(Geneva Smitherman, Talkin That Talk: Language, Culture, and Education in African America. Routledge, 2000) Long after they learn to behave as adults expect them to, children continue to investigate the boundaries of sense and nonsense. Anti-language flourishes in the society of children as an unself-conscious culture (Opie, 1959).(Margaret Meek, Play and Paradox, in Language And Learning, ed. by G. Wells and J. Nicholls. Routledge, 1985) Nadsat: Anti-Language in A Clockwork Orange [T]here is something at once delightful and horrible, dogged and elusive in A Clockwork Orange [by Anthony Burgess] . . .. There is something about the novel so frightening that it demanded a new language and something so immanent in the message of the novel that it refused to be separated from the language. . . .The novels tempo, and its overwhelming linguistic accomplishment is to a great degree based upon the language Nadsat, coined for the book: the language of the droogs and of the night. It is the jargon of rape, plunder, and murder veiled in unfamiliarity, and as such it works highly successfully. . . . The novel makes a fleeting reference to the origins of the language. Odd bits of old rhyming slang . . . a bit of gipsy talk, too. But most of the roots are Slav. Propaganda. Sublimation penetration (p. 115).(Esther Petix, Linguistics, Mechanics, and Metaphysics: Anthony Burgesss A Clockwork Orange (1962). Old Lines, New Forces: Essays on the Contemporary British Novel, 1960-19 70, ed. by Robert K. Morris. Associated University Presses, 1976)Nadsat is derived from Russian, British, and Cockney rhyming slang. Burgess said that elements of the language were inspired by the Edwardian Strutters, British teenagers in the late 1950s who carried out violent attacks on innocent people. Rhyming slang is characteristic of Londons East End, where speakers substitute random rhyming words for others: for example, nasty becomes Cornish pasty; key becomes Bruce Lee; and so on. (Stephen D. Rogers, The Dictionary of Made-Up Languages. Adams Media, 2011)

Medical Ethics - Case Study Example of Kansas, the State of Kansas statute is in one way or the other referenced and is qualified to be in a persistent vegetative state are underlying values of the statue mentioned. As the statute entails protecting the fetus; hence, validating the attending physicianââ¬â¢s decision to disqualify Janetââ¬â¢s declaration. As such, the advance health care directive in light is particularly tailored for a single party (the woman) and excluding any additional party which is the fetus, in this case. Allowing the physician to place the patient on life-sustaining procedures before the legal matter is discussed and clarified would be a fit decision because it co-exists with the statute referenced in a note found in the patientââ¬â¢s medical record. Janetââ¬â¢s fetus is obliged to a surrogate because the advance health directive about life prolongation excludes any other party if Janetââ¬â¢s vegetative state would have been persistent. Surrogacy to the fetus will allow Janetââ¬â¢s directives to be upheld as she wished without compromising medical ethics by not withdrawing life from the fetus as

The Search for Self in Tirra Lirra by the River Essay -- Tirra Lirra b
The Search for Self in Tirra Lirra by the Riverà à It has been suggested that Tirra Lirra by the River can be regarded as a novel which aims eventually at a better understanding"2. In my opinion understanding is achieved at two levels in the novel. The first type of understanding is personal and introspective, and is discovered by the central character. The other is societal, achieved through allegory and symbolism, and aimed at the reader. Jessica Anderson aims to develop this dual understanding through the exploration of two main themes: the quest for self-knowledge, and the consequences of gendered societal repression. In this essay I will explore these themes, and how much Nora and the audience respectively finally understand in relation to them. The Quest for Self-Knowledge Nora Porteous, the main character of Tirra Lirra by the River, embarks on a voyage of self discovery as an elderly lady - mostly while in bed recovering from pneumonia. As physical exertion, which the reader later discovers has been her usual response to periods of 'waiting', is denied her, she begins to explore her inner world of imagination and memory. Her most important discovery is that she has lived under the curse of an imbalance between imagination and reality all her life. This imbalance is signified by Nora's many correlations to Tennyson's "Lady of Shallot", and by the chasm between her physical appearance and actions and her inner character. One of the most obvious traits shared by the Lady and Nora, is their desire for the perfect social world of Camelot. Nora's 'Camelot' is a "region of [her] mind, where infinite expansion was possible" and is more real than "the discomfort of knees imprinted by the cane of a chair" (... ... from p. 61. Kambili Change in Character
Literature Essay ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Kambili change in characterâ⬠The novel ââ¬Å"Purple Hibiscusâ⬠by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie tells a story of how two Nigerain children rebelled against their very father. For these children to end up rebelling against their father they must first bring about a change in themselves, they must become more mature, more responsible and not so dependent on their father. Kambili is one of those children that does go through a considerable change in her character, she reaches maturity. In fact this novel is a bildungsroman which is a story about a character self-development, her change. At the beginning of the novel, Kambili is seen as immature and young because of the fact that she is very observant but does not say anything because she is a rather shy girl. She is also shown as a naive and innocent, which makes us feel for her more. Kambili is also obsessed with her father, she thinks he is always right and as a result obeys him.She is only happy when she makes her father happy, this is shown when she sleeps happily when she knows that her father was proud of her that she came first in class. Kambili is considered as a ââ¬Å"backyard snobâ⬠because she never talks to anyone, never had any friends. This is not only because Eugene is very strict with his schedules and wants Kambili to be constantly studying but also she is a very shy girl and cannot express her emotions, in fact she barely ever laughs; ââ¬Å"i was not sure wat my laughter sounded likeâ⬠.Kambili can be compared to Amaka, her cousin, who is the complete opposite of Kamibli. Amaka laughs, wears make-up, is a lively girl, listens to music and basically is like another normal teenage girl. However Amaka is one of those people who caused a change in Kambili because these two people became very close, in fact they become like sisters: tell stories to each other and Amaka helps her to cook. Amaka helps Kambili to become more open and helps her make friend s. Amaka is only one of the many people that brought about a change in Kambili life.Nsukka in general brigns change. It is when Kambili and Jaja visist Nsukka that they start to change, become more mature. This is because they live a different lifestyle, they are not constrained to Papa, they are allowed to be free and experiment! ââ¬Å"Nsukka air will be good for me, for my recuperationâ⬠Father Amadi is another person who changed Kambili. Father amadi is an encouraging person who makes Kambili change. This is shown when Amadi manages to convince Kambili to run after him! In fact she says ââ¬Å"i had smiled, run, laughedâ⬠, 3 things she had never one before. Because of the fact that Kambili starts to idealize and fall in love with Amadi that she starts to look up to Amadi and not to her father anymore! Father Amadi can be considered as one of her only friends! Aunty Ifeoma also helped kambili become less dependant on papa, this is shown when she takes the schedules from Kambili and Jaja and for the first time in their life Kambili and Jaja are free to do what they like which causes them to change. This change and maturity in Kambili is later shown when she starts to defy papa. This is shown when she steals the picture of papa Nnukwu and keeps it in her room and when she describes Papa as a ââ¬Å"tall strangerâ⬠! However Kambili still remains loyal to her father and obeys him still, she does not go to the extent and rebel totally against him, unlike Jaja. This also shows that she isnââ¬â¢t mature enough and therefore obeys her father and Jaja to an extent. One can conclude that due to Papa strictness she had a restricted life where she could not hang out with other people. She was also scared of Papa because he used to abuse her and as a result Kambili did not know how to express herself properly and was usually very silent ââ¬Å"bubbles in my throatâ⬠. However when she went to Nsukka; Amaka, Aunty Ifeoma and Father Amadi brought chang e. Due to these people and due to the fact that she was more free she learnt how to express herself, smile and laugh more often and act more and more like a natural girl. This causes her to start to defy Papa. Due to this maturity Kambili and papa manage to rebel against their fanatic father.

Lululemon Business Strategy Essay
Lululemon was founded by Chip Wilson who took a commercial yoga class in Vancouver and was immediately drawn in to the concept. After spending many years in the surf, skate, and snowboarding business, he found yoga was performed using cotton clothing and this seemed inappropriate because it neither removed sweat adequately nor did it allow for maximum flexibility. Given his passion and expertise in technical athletic fabrics, he began a movement in yoga clothing where he relied on feedback from yoga instructors to optimize his apparel. Lululemon was founded in 1998 to meet these goals. It opened its first store in November 2000 in Kitsilano, a beach area of Vancouver BC. Beyond getting feedback from instructors on how to improve the performance of the apparel, the firm sought to act as a community hub where people can interact and share the physical and mental aspects of having a healthy lifestyle. 1. What are the key elements of the strategy that Lululemon is pursuing? What generic strategy best fits Lululemonââ¬â¢s strategy? The five key elements are: Grow the company store base in North America The strategic objective was to add new stores to strengthen the companyââ¬â¢s presence and then tap into new geographical markets in the Canada and US Increase brand awareness Leveraging the publicity surrounding, the opening of new stores with grass roots marketing programs. This included organizing events and partnering with local fitness coaches. Introduce new product technologies Continue to focus on developing and offering products that incorporate technology enhanced fabrics, and performance features that differentiate Lululemon for its competitor and increase its customer base. Broaden the appeal of Lululemon products This is divided in 3 sections 1. Adding men apparel to the line 2. Expanding to product category to items such as athletic bags, undergarments, sandals, outerwear 3. Adding products suitable additional sports and athletic activities Expand beyond North America Expand their presence in Australia and Japan. Then eventually pursue the Asian and European markets that offer similar, attractive demographics. Distinctive shopping expericance Provide a distinctive in-store shopping experience, complemented by strong ties to fitness instructors, fitness establishments and community events The two biggest strategic adjustments since 2007 had been to drawback from the use of franchising and sell directly to the consumers through the company website. Lululemon fits itself in a differentiated niche strategy 2. Is Lululemonââ¬â¢s strategy effective? Letââ¬â¢s look at the following to determine if the strategy is effective for Lululemon The firm currently has three segments: Corporate-Owned Stores The corporate-owned stores segment includes all sales to customers through corporate-owned stores in North America and Australia. This segment is by far Lululemonââ¬â¢s largest revenue base and will continue to be successful as Lululemon looks to expand its base in 2012 by opening 30 stores in the United States and 2 Ivivva Athletica stores in Canada. Direct To Consumers The Direct to Consumers segment involves Lululemonââ¬â¢s e-commerce website. Which is 10.6 % of revenue (2011) comes from this segment. The idea behind is to shift from brick-and-mortar stores to online channels, Lululemonââ¬â¢s commitment to increasing its presence in e-commerce will help the company expand its customer base and improve brand awareness. Franchise While previously franchise sales were part of their strategy, the companyà reported that it will no longer partake in the business and that it had reacquired its four remaining franchise stores during fiscal 2011. SWOT Analysis Strength Trademarked fabrics Community involvement ââ¬â offered free yoga class on monthly basis Employee training Innovation Style/comfort Multiple green initiatives Quality ââ¬â products designed to sustain 5 years of intended use while maintaining functional Brand identity Weakness High retail price Narrow product line Quality control/supply chain Marketing targeted to mostly yoga instructors/studios Loss of customer service with increased scale Weak brand recognition Lack of targeting to men Opportunity Expand product line Serve additional market segments Expand into additional geographic markets Increased demand in athletic apparel Fitness craze Threats Increased competition from current large players in the market Copy cats Economy New entrants Risk of banking on niche markets Lululemon only went public five years ago and have not entered any new industries (focusing mostly in the fitness apparel industry). They have done some corporate restructuring shortly after the company was formed, Lululemonà entered into franchise agreements and then a joint venture. The idea behind this was based on growing the brand to meet consumer demand while conserving financial resources. This was a very effective strategy and served Lululemon well in establishing themselves as a multinational company, helping to build on economies of scope, increasing brand awareness and building a larger customer base. In 2011, Lululemon finally repurchased all the franchise organizations and now all of their stores are corporate owned. The ultimate motive for closing out the franchise business was to preserve and maintain control over branding and focus more on e-commerce. We believe this strategy will work well for Lululemon as it preserves its brand image / competitive advantage and st aying competitive in the online market as well. 3. Top Key Issues facing the company needs to focus on are: The analysis shows us that the retail apparel industry is competitive with very low barriers to entry. Lululemonââ¬â¢s success will attract new competitors to the industry and attract interest from existing competitors. Ultimately, this is a competitive industry with limited barriers to entry. The athletic apparel industry is very competitive, with well capitalized rivals such as Nike and Gap, Inc. Lululemon has limited intellectual property in regards to its performance fabrics and manufacturing processes, therefore the quality and innovation components of strategy could easily be replicated. Lululemonââ¬â¢s self reinforcing activities, such as target customer base, tailored products and community based marketing approach make it very challenging for existing retailers to challenge Lululemon in its market from their own store bases. However, there are limited barriers to entry in this industry and Lululemon should expect new competition to try to copy its format This analysis brings us to issues the company is / could face: Increasing Competition Despite occupying a unique niche within the athletic apparel industry, Lululemon has recently gained competitors in recent years. I.e. Bigà companies with large market capitals such as Nike, Adidas, and Under Armor have dominated the athletic apparel industry and keep gaining more ground. With the exception of a commitment to creating innovative products in apparel, these initiatives are in contrast to Lululemon. In order to market its products, Lululemon completely shuns away from print or media advertising and instead focuses on selecting ambassadors within carefully selected markets. As a result, itââ¬â¢s possible for Lululemonââ¬â¢s competitors to achieve and maintain brand awareness and market share more quickly Narrow focus Lululemon is targeted towards sophisticated and educated women who understand importance of active, healthy lifestyle. Under-Armor, Nike, and Adidas are targeted towards men and women of all ages. New Threats Apart from the big name athletic apparel manufacturers, competitors such as Gapââ¬â¢s Athleta brand, Lucy Activewear Inc. and Bebe Storesââ¬â¢ BEBE SPORT collection have emerged as competitors to Lululemon. Price Point and Manufacturing In light of the new and old competitors, Lululemon could be forced to sell their products at lower price thus reducing margins. Plus Lululemon does not own exclusive intellectual property rights to the technology for its products. This makes it easier for current and future competitors to manufacture and sell products with similar performance capabilities and styling. Cross-country differences in demographic, cultural and market conditions. Buyer tastes for a particular product or service sometimes differ substantially from country to country. Sometimes, product designs suitable in one country are inappropriate in another because of differing local standards. Lululemon is operating in an international marketplace and they have to wrestle with whether and how much to customize their products in each different country market to match the tastes and preferences of local buyers or whether to pursue a strategy of offering a mostly standardized product worldwide. For example, the clothing for women offered in the winterà season will be different from Canada to Australia and vise versa. Firstly, Australia gets hardly any snow and while Canada on the other hand, gets majorly hit every winter. Therefore, the running gear and the hoodies offered in both countries will vary because of the temperature and the climate. Making products that are closely matched to local tastes make them more appealing to local buyers, customizing Lululemonââ¬â¢s products country by country may have the effect of raising production and distribution costs due to the greater variety of designs and components, shorter production runs, and the complications of added inventory branding and distribution logistics. The second issue of transnational strategy incorporates elements of both a globalized and localized approach to strategy making. This type of middle ground strategy is called for when there are relatively high needs for local responsiveness as well as appreciable benefits to be realized from standardization. This strategy that Lululemon is trying to apply has its own disadvantages, such as; it is more complex and harder to implement, conflicting goals may be difficult to reconcile and require trade-offs and implementation more costly and time-consuming. All major global companies employ the franchising strategy. With the franchising strategy, the franchisee bears most of the costs and risks of establishing foreign locations; while Lululemon would have to expend only the resources to recruit, train, support, and monitor franchisees. The big problem that Lululemon is facing currently has to bear all costs of stores all around the world. With this, they would have to ensure that they are providing the products at discounted costs but also having to monitor to ensure that their standard for stores and customer service and experience is maintained. 4. Recommendations for management to improve performance / address key issues The recommendations we have for management is to improve performance and address the key issues, are employing a think global and act local strategy (Transnational). They need to ensure that each country does have the required customizations because the demographics, cultural differences and market conditions vary from country to country. They need to ensure that all their locations follow the same guidelines and customer satisfaction guidelines like they have for their primary locations. Price point and Manufacturing Lululemon does not own any intellectual property to the technology of what processes their products. In turn this makes it easy for competitors to imitate their style. Through analysis, a recommendation to solve this issue would be to patent their processing system. This would be beneficial to the company in such ways as; increasing price points, which in turn increases overall profits. It will also allow for a higher competitive advantage, making it difficult for competing companyââ¬â¢s to imitate or copy their style. Sponsor Events and Shows Lululemon should sponsor some sort of events to gain publicity and increase brand awareness. Such can be done by organizing yoga events on a grand scale or some sort of sporting event. Not as high scale as done by its competitors (Nike sponsors the PGA Golf and Adidas sponsors FIFA) E.g. Lululemon could organize a yoga event at the Metro Convention Hall, Toronto Expand in Asia and Europe The company should plan to enhance its European and Asia market, recruiting new management talent and initiating an aggressive program to regionalize this business utilizing a consistent brand image throughout Europe and Asia. New Customers Lululemon should find new customers base other than its niche market. A potential target niche would be adding apparel for golf and tennis into its stores. Action Plan to address issues and improve performance The following action plan is the recommended steps we believe would be the appropriate approach to successfully completing these recommendations. Appendix 1 Value Chain Analysis Supply Chain Management 45 different manufacturers, no long-term contracts ââ¬â can improve quality control and lower costs by decreasing # and agreeing to contracts Operations Tighten inspection and verification processes to ensure another recall does not occur (see-through pants issue) Distribution Facilities only in Vancouver-BC, Sumner, Washington, and Melbourne, Australia Limits Companyââ¬â¢s reach Growth in online sales can offset Sales/Marketing Depend on word of mouth and community based marketing ââ¬â can increase marketing via media (television, magazines, etc.) and other avenues

Top tips for smart email - Emphasis
Top tips for smart email Top tips for smart email Its easy to think of email as an electronic form chatting, but to do so can be dangerous. For instance, you may say something in email that you would never put in a letter. Yet in law they may amount to the same thing. At the very least, email has a permanence that a chance remark made over a cup of coffee never would. Email is also easy to misinterpret, lacking the visual clues (a smile, a wink) of face-to-face conversations. And you may never know if what you write provokes a strong emotional and potentially damaging response. For this reason, email is best suited for simple communications, such as: scheduling meetings updates easy-to-solve problems minutes. It is not suitable for: emotive issues complicated issues criticism. Anything that is likely to get an emotive response is best done face-to-face (difficult though that may be), or at least with a memo or letter. Why? Well just imagine youre giving someone bad news. The last thing you want to do is provoke them to blow their top in a counter email or even to send an angry email to other people. Cut the clutter Most people complain of getting too many emails. But there are ways to cut down on the number of messages you and your colleagues receive. Here are some tips: Distribute each message only to people who really must see it avoid copying to other people for information. Unsubscribe to e-zines and email newsletters if you never read them. (NB. Dont do this with spam see below.) Set up filters to file or delete particular types of email automatically. Never reply to unsolicited spam to ask to be removed from a mailing list: many unscrupulous companies use this to verify email addresses before spamming them even more. Never use email for complex issues pick up the phone instead. Likewise, avoid emotive topics like appraisals or requests for a pay rise. These are far better dealt with face-to-face.

This job is absolutely made for you! So, whatââ¬â¢s the catch? There might be internal candidates vying for the same jobââ¬âand they have a leg up. Here are 4 things internal candidates have going for them that will net them your dream job almost every time, unless you learn how to preempt the situation.1. They know the company.Internal candidates, whether theyââ¬â¢ve worked at a place for two months or 20à years, know the mission, goals, culture, hierarchy, values, etc. of the company inside and out. They also might have an understanding of the interior politics involved in this particular job opening. You do not. What you can do is research the company. Do your homework. And make sure that if you get asked in an interview about the company, youââ¬â¢re spouting information off as naturally as if youââ¬â¢d been working there ten ye ars. Act like you already do!2. The company knows them.Better the devil you know? Also better the angels. If a company knows an inside candidate can get the job done well, then theyââ¬â¢re more likely to hire them again. They also have a good sense of their work ethic, their social skills, their strengths and weaknesses. What you need to do is articulate your value. Go ahead and be upfront about this- and use it as an asset. After all, not being a known entity has its advantages. Remind them you bring a fresh perspective with you. Donââ¬â¢t be shy to share some of your new ideas in the interview. Show yourself as the most qualified person for the job, and show them they donââ¬â¢t need to worry about your delivering on your promises.3. Personal relationships are already established.Internal candidates have a bunch of people on the inside- coworkers, contacts, friends- who are loyal and will vouch for them. That goes a long way. Theyââ¬â¢ve made inroads, and have developed relationships with their team and other teams that make lots of people in the company comfortable working with them.Your only shot here is to network. Find an ââ¬Å"inâ⬠in the company, someone who could refer you or offer a personal recommendation. Or even someone youââ¬â¢ve developed a relationship with who could give you some advice from the inside on how to best prepare your application.4. Theyââ¬â¢re already a fit.Youââ¬â¢re still trying to figure out what the company culture is, and the internal candidate is already in it. Unless theyââ¬â¢re not doing well or fitting in, theyââ¬â¢ve got a huge leg up on you because their bosses will already be comfortable with them, even like them. This might be the number one reason internal candidates win out in the end- they already fit.The way you prepare can go a long way towards giving the hiring manager the same sense. Do a bit of research to figure out what you can about the company culture, then- particularly if t here are values you share- go ahead and emphasize the ways in which you fit. Talk the talk, walk the walk, etc. Show them youââ¬â¢re one of them. Put them at ease. If you can do all that and prove that youââ¬â¢d be an asset to the team, youââ¬â¢ll have a good chance of beating out your competition from within.

Emily Dickinson Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Emily Dickinson - Assignment Example ââ¬Å"The categories then are, in Andersonââ¬â¢s summery, ââ¬Å"art, nature, the self, death and its sequelâ⬠. He then observes that these categories are in no sense hard and fast, or mutually exclusive.â⬠(Emily Dickinson Handbook, PP 186). Andersonââ¬â¢s reading tries to summarize Emily Dickinsonââ¬â¢s poems; but admits that the thematic structure of her poems is too complex to be summarized that easily. The eccentric recluse: Emily Dickinson was what we might call an eccentric who wished to remain a child for ever. Her letters repeatedly express this wish. She was a recluse who wore only white dress through out her entire adult life. Though she talks of her love, both in her poetry and in her letters, she remained unmarried and it is not clear whether these lovers were real or imaginary. She grew lonelier after the age of thirty and never left her house. She almost lived closed door in her room with a window that opened out to the nature. ââ¬Å"I am no body! Who are you? / Are you nobody too? / Then thereââ¬â¢s a pair of us! ââ¬âdonââ¬â¢t tell! / Theyââ¬â¢d banish us you know. ... She refused to leave her room even when she was dying. She very rarely met a special visitor. She depended on her sister Lavinia for her food and other needs; she loved the children of her brother. It is said that she used to lower sweets and baked goods through a pulley outside her window for the children of her home and the neighborhood. She lived alone and wrote poems, without the burden of the usual mediocre woman duties. Even her sister Lavinia came to know of the over 1700 poems of her sister after her death only. But she was in touch with the outside world through her correspondence, the most important of which were her letters to Thomas Wentworth Higginson, the American author and Unitarian minister. On April 16, 1862 Higginson received a letter from a 32 year old woman from Amherst, Massachusetts, which included four poems of hers. They were marked ââ¬Å"not for publicationâ⬠! The letter started like this ââ¬Å"Mr. Higginson, are you too deeply occupied to say if my v erse is alive? .The mind is so near itself it cannot see distinctly, and I have none to askâ⬠. (Atlantic Monthly, October 1891, PP 444) The words poetically echoes the soul of a lonely being, with nothing else than poetry to hold close to her heart. In 1891 Higginson wrote in an article about this early correspondence. ââ¬Å" The impression of a wholly new and original poetic geniusâ⬠he said , ââ¬Å" was as distinct on my mind at the first reading of these four poems , as it is now after thirty years of further knowledge ; and with it came the problem never yet solved , what place ought to be assigned in literature , to what is so remarkable , yet so elusive of criticismâ⬠( Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson, PP6). Higginson became her mentor and encouraged
